When I got back to our room, the room with the map, there was no sign of Pickett. I had set up both our cots by the wall; his bedding was all laid out for him. The place had a roomy feel, like a penthouse with all the windows. I took a flat part of the map as a desk and sat down.

It was time to think.

I took out my notebook—with the black-and-white marble cover, the kind I had used in school and through my whole professional life—and started to write down the facts of the case as I knew them. There was a lantern in the room, and outside it was completely black. When I looked up I could see myself in the window, behind the miniature hills and valleys of the Taroko reserve.
